World MS Day: Experts urge support for Multiple Sclerosis patients

Saturday, February 19, MSAIN (Multiple Sclerosis Awareness in Nigeria) invited a few MS patients to a two-hour “Meet & Greet,” which was the NGOs first public event since its establishment.
This was held at the meeting conference rooms at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja. The event was a divided into two parts, the first part featured brief introduction and history by the MS patients present, followed by a discussion on the way forward for the NGO.

The event, organised by a medical practitioner and Mrs. Yemisi Ilo in collaboration with Multiple Sclerosis Awareness in Nigeria (MSAIN) and Integral, attracted experts from various fields, including neurology, alternative medicine, traditional medicine, physiotherapy, and nutrition, aiming to educate the public about MS and discuss effective management strategies.

Erepere Bello, founder of MSAIN, shared her journey with MS, highlighting the crucial role of community support.
“We are stigmatised at work; it’s lonely. We have people in our community who have died from depression. Support is crucial, even if it’s just letting someone know they are not alone,” Bello said. She stressed that while MS is challenging, it is not a death sentence, and finding a supportive network is vital for survival.
Dr. Adefemi Daniel, a neurologist, emphasized the importance of non-drug treatments. He urged medical practitioners to stay informed about global best practices and prioritize non-drug approaches. “Over 75% of conditions managed in hospitals have no cure. Non-drug approaches often matter more than the drug approach,” Daniel explained.
He noted the rarity of MS in Nigeria, pointing out that it is often overlooked and misdiagnosed, and called for better education and awareness among healthcare providers.

Daniel also stressed the need for government intervention in funding MS management.
